Finding the Perfect Wedding Gown for You Based on Your Body Type

On your wedding day, you’ll want to look your beautiful best, and finding that perfect bridal gown -- one that seems to have been uniquely made for you -- is one of the first things you’ll need (and probably love!) to do. But wedding gowns come in all sorts of different basic styles, such as ball gown, mermaid, sheath, trumpet, and A-line. And then there are the different lengths to think about. Should you choose a floor-length dress? A tea-length? A mini? What is the best way to go about choosing your gown’s silhouette?

The answer: Let your body decide.

As with all the other clothes you wear, the shape of your body will determine what basic style of wedding gowns will make you look gorgeous, so we’ve written a little guide to help you focus your search for that one-of-a-kind gown you’ll see for the rest of your life when you show off your wedding album.

Apple-Shape

If you tend to have a bit of a tummy, your goal is to make your torso look longer, and your belly look smaller. To achieve this effect, choose an A-Line gown or a dress with an Empire waist, especially one with a deeper neckline, such as a V-neck. If you like the look of your legs and arms, choosing such a dress that also emphasizes your limbs could be lovely. To show off your legs, select a tea-length dress or a dress with slits; to show off your arms, go sleeveless.

Pear-Shape

If you have hips or a derriere you’re wanting to de-emphasize, look for gowns with an A-line, “fairy-tale” ball gown, or Empire-waisted style. Avoid trumpet, mermaid, or sheath styles as they will draw the eye to the areas you’re trying to hide.

Hourglass-Shape

You’re one of the lucky women who can wear pretty much any style of dress, but if you’re really wanting to show off those curves, choosing a sheath, trumpet, or mermaid style gown will help you look especially stunning.

Rectangle-Shape

If you’re built rather “straight up and down,” you’ll look your best by creating the illusion of curves where none exist. An Empire-waist, ball gown, sheath style, or an A-line dress can help give you a flattering bust-line and hips. Look especially for detailing around the bust area (beading, embroidery, feathers, ruching, etc.) to help effect a fuller-looking bust line.
